I am in the middle of a book by Carl Hiaasen called Scat. I am reading it mainly because it's part of the 6th grade curriculum, but I have also heard that Carl Hiaasen is a great author, so I am really looking forward to this book. The main character, Nick is the narrator and he lives in Florida. He has some interesting classmates-one of them is nicknamed “Smoke” who eats a pencil in its entirety when when he gets upset with his teacher, Ms. Starch. This doesn't seem like a very big deal until Smoke goes missing-and so does his teacher, Ms. Starch.
The whole class goes on a field trip to a swamp and they have to leave early because of a forest fire. After they are evacuated the kids all get back to school safely but for some reason, Ms. Starch goes missing. It seems like the story is going to be wrapped up in the mystery trying to figure out where Ms. Starch went and who Smoke is. So far, It's a pretty good book. It has some really interesting characters and some pretty crazy circumstances. It reminds me a little bit of the book Wayside School is falling down, mainly because the characters are so whacky. I can't say that I can relate to the characters because I don't live in Florida, but I love reading stories that involve middle schoolers because I teach middle school. I also am starting to realize why Carl Hiaasen is such a popular author. I think this book will continue to get better.

Ahhhh Summer,
Time to relax, enjoy the sun, take graduate classes and raise a child! Here I am in my fist summer as a dad, trying to take classes and enjoy myself, but all the while I have to take care of a bubbling, laughing, screaming, delightful little human while my wife is at work. So far its been going well, but I have earned a deep respect for my mother and all of the parents of my children. Parenting is not easy. It takes time, headaches, and diapers. I am trying my best, and I know I can do it, but it sure is hard to get anything else done. I hope your summers are all going well. |
